It was my dream. To live and work, short-term, in a foreign country. I had wanted to try this for a long time and now, immediately after graduation from college, seemed like the time. When better to leave the country than when you owe vast sums?

The question was how to achieve it. First, get a position somewhere overseas. Then move there and work for a while, hopefully accumulating new language skills and a few mementos along the way. I envisioned Japanese fans and kimonos, German steins and lederhosen, Russian hats and empty casks of vodka decorating my future home.

As it happened, the job came to me instead of me going to it. I am fanatical about reading the newspaper; for some reason I have to read it cover-to-cover daily or I worry that a disease that I had no previous knowledge of will come and wipe out my life. A bus I was riding, owned by a company that I didn’t realize had a really bad maintenance reputation and record, would lose its brakes and I’d find myself doing a header off the Fremont Bridge.

So, reading the paper one day in a local coffee shop, I saw it. An ad for English teachers in Japan. After applying, suiting up and teaching mock English lessons for three “students” in a dead classroom, and lying to overly-intrusive questions about my abilities to be a workaholic in a foreign country, I had the job.

So: how to get there… Do I hire some international moving company and transfer my entire life? Or do I sell everything and start over in a new place, trying to interpret sizes on clothes and shoes and developing new, weird tastes in furniture? I had some money to invest in this, and a deadline that I could live with, which was a blessing.

I decided on going the international moving company route, getting out of Dodge with my stuff intact. I prefer to have some semblance of continuity in life, if it’s achievable. But here is where enthusiasm and optimism came to a shuddering, crunching crash with reality. The money kind, that is.

International moving companies are few. They are expensive. And they live for liability. Fortunately, they also are very careful if they want to preserve their reputations and businesses. So, after extensive review of the web sites I found and testimonials I read, I hired an international moving company of some repute. I signed on every dotted line, massaging my hand at the end.

Worth the money? Every penny! I couldn’t believe this operation. They came into my world and boxed it in two days. They even wrapped my teaspoons in bubble wrap and taped them together. Getting everything to Japan wasn’t a problem. Getting everything untapped, unrolled, and unpacked took about three weeks.

Because of the efforts of the international moving company I flew to Japan in peace, lived two years in constant wonder at my surroundings, and came home after a hard day’s work to an environment I recognized as home.

Fire is a veritable nightmare for any property owner, whether it is an apartment complex, a house, a business, or even just a piece of land. It can be devastating, but the most danger and expense usually comes from fires that affect the inside of a home or other building. These can wreak havoc on the lives of those who live in the home or even just the person renting it out, depending on whose fault the fire was, if it was anyone’s fault. There are a few things that you should do and not do if your house is the victim of a fire in order to clean up, especially if you cannot hire a restoration company to help you do so.

First, let us talk about the things that you really should do.

If you have pets in the home, you should remove them and get them to a safe environment as quickly as possible after the fire is out. You should not allow your pets, especially birds, to re-enter the home until the damage is taken care of. Birds are especially sensitive to smoke and other gases, so getting them removed from the home is very important to prevent the loss of life.

Open the windows and allow the air from outside to circulate. This will help get rid of the smell of smoke in the home. If your vacuum cleaner made it out of the fire or preferably if you have access to someone else’s, then using this to collect soot and other particles from your carpets, curtains, and upholstery should be the next thing that you do.

If you have plants, wash them completely in water and make sure that soot and other particles are not allowed to stay on them for long.

The things that you should not do should start with not using any electrical appliances (including your vacuum cleaner) until they have been checked and cleaned.

Do not attempt to clean porous surfaces like your ceilings and walls.

Sitting down on any furniture in your home that is upholstered (i.e. porous) is not recommended until they have been vacuumed and covered with plastic.

Any food items that were in the home at the time of the fire should be thrown away. This includes canned goods.

These tips are designed with your safety and your home’s restoration in mind. There may be other things that a restoration company could do to help you and in some cases, hiring a professional is the best thing that you can do. Weigh the pros and cons of hiring a professional and then decide what is best for you. Dealing with a home that has been water damaged due to the water from fire trucks is also another matter to contend with. Always consider hiring a professional to deal with extensive damage.

Your bathroom is the room in your home that most people associate with cleanliness, but it’s one of the worst places for you to allow mold to propagate. Along with the kitchen, this is one of the most common places for mold to be found in the home. What can you do to prevent mold from growing in your bathroom? Here are a few tips.

Check the caulking around the bath tub or shower stall and make sure it isn’t cracked, broken, or even missing in certain areas. If you feel cold air coming in through a hole in the caulking, you should re-caulk it immediately.

It’s not uncommon to find mold growing around the base of your toilet, especially if the toilet has overflowed often in the past or worse, if you have carpet in your bathroom instead of tile. Carpet is generally a bad idea in a bathroom unless you’re very diligent in cleaning up spills of water as soon as they’re made.

You want a vent or a fan in your bathroom so that heat and moisture can escape to the outside of the house. Mold grows not only on the floors of the bathroom, but also on the ceilings where water has been absorbed due to the steam of taking a shower being unable to escape the room.

If you can see mold on the outer surface of your bathroom wall, odds are that you’re looking at a mold problem inside the wall, as well, and cleaning the mold off the outer surface of the wall isn’t going to be enough. If you truly want to get rid of all the mold, you’ll want to replace mold-contaminated building materials, except for wood supports. This includes plywood, carpet, papered sheetrock, plasterboard, and etcetera. If your bathroom has carpet in it and you find mold growing anywhere near the floor, replace the carpet.

Whatever you do, don’t try to cut corners by painting on top of your mold problem. Mold eats paint like candy and it’s nowhere near an effective solution. Even paints containing mildicides are not effective, because these are not strong enough to kill toxic mold infestations.

If you leave moist dirty clothes or towels on the floor in your bathroom closet often, expect mold to grow there. Toss your clothes in a plastic clothes basket instead of directly on the floor and this is one of the best things that you can do to prevent mold in the bathroom that most people don’t think about. We tend to let damp or even wet towels stay on the floor indefinitely, especially if we live in busy households. Clean out your dirty clothes bin often, especially if the clothes are wet.

When home buyers finally decide to purchase a new home, one of the first things they consider remodeling tends to be the bathroom. Bathroom remodeling isn’t always the easiest thing to do, especially if you are so unlucky as to find a colony of mold living in what is supposed to be one of the most comforting and relaxing areas of your home. Most people, however, wouldn’t know what to do if they found a mold colony in any part of their home, much less their beloved bathroom, even though this is one of the more likely places to find it.

The reason that the bathroom is one of the most common places to find infestations of mold is because there is a constant pattern of heat and humidity in this space. While some kinds of mold pose no threat to human beings, other kinds of mold can be hazardous to our health and can even render our homes uninhabitable. Black mold is found in many bathrooms and basements and it is very toxic. It has been known to cause rashes, fevers, flu-like symptoms and other health complications. If you discover what you think is black mold (and it truly does appear to be black), it’s best to call in a professional to get rid of it.

While it’s expensive to have the mold in your home removed, you will definitely want to put this on your to-do list. It can and will move to other parts of your home if it’s left unchecked. After the mold is removed successfully and you continue with your bathroom remodeling project, you’ll want to take steps to prevent the re-growth of mold in the future.

Install a bathroom fan while you’re remodeling if you don’t already have one. This is one of the best things that you can do to prevent mold from sneaking back into your quiet space. Bathroom fans get rid of the majority of the moisture that mold needs to grow and survive. Even if you’re not remodeling right now and your bathroom has no visible signs of mold, don’t bet on mold not invading there in the future, if you don’t have a fan in the bathroom, you should get one.

After showering or bathing, the shower curtain should be shaken off in the tub to direct as much water as possible toward the drain. Water that collects on the walls surrounding the tub should also be wiped either dry or down toward the drain with a squeegee. You want all the surfaces in your bathroom to dry out as quickly as possible.

Someone special celebrating a special occasion? Want to thank your friends for standing up in your wedding? Maybe you just want to show appreciation to someone for all that they’ve done for you. One of the best ways to do so is to give personalized gifts. By giving personalized gifts, you are showing thoughtfulness. Picking something you know they would enjoy and giving it that extra personal touch shows that you were spending time thinking about them. It’s a basic lesson of gift-giving that children learn early in their lives: it’s the thought that counts, not how much money you spend.

            To that end, it’s important to choose something that you know the person will enjoy. Just slapping an engraving on anything defeats the purpose of personalized gifts. Do you know a wine lover? You can get a bottle engraved with their name on it. Giving a gift basket? Fill it with goodies that you know they will enjoy. You can even think further outside the box: get your Chinese food-loving friends a set of engraved chopsticks. Or anyone can enjoy a nice picture frame with a message engraved on it.

            It’s important when personalizing gifts to spend time thinking about what that person would like and enjoy most. It’s a staple of gift giving, and it can guarantee that your gift will be received warmly.

Once a job offer is made, a lot of people think they have no basis for negotiating but they would be surprised, with the right approach, that they can often secure compensation packages beyond what they thought was possible. A key point to remember is that negotiating more at the start of a job can turn into a substantial amount of increased earnings over the course of several years. Once people achieve an increased level of earnings, they tend to maintain that difference over where they were for several years.

The negotiation process we recommend at ITS is easy to use. Based on our thousands of negotiations, it was carefully developed to be easy to use. It is based on common sense and the art of soft selling, so that you get what you want without offending the employer in any way.

There are five key areas you want to consider:

(1)   The initial offer, can you get it increased by 10% to 30%;

(2)   The responsibilities, can you expand them to a larger job that would pay more;

(3)   A signing bonus, which can be 10% to 30% of the salary in some cases;

(4)   The benefits, is the company willing to extend;

(5) Stock options, whether they are available, and under what terms.

ITS gives job hunter’s guidance in each of those areas. There is also a lot of information on salary surveys to give you current information on which to base negotiations, and a cost-of-living comparison of various areas for those who are relocating. Senior level job seekers will be especially interested in the discussion of the various types of stock options and grants, exit strategies and severance agreements, and a dozen or so other benefits that can be a significant part of the total compensation package.

ITS offers Personal Marketing Services that goes far beyond Outplacement Career counseling. ITS uses its own unique technology to give job seekers access to as much as 85% of the advertised openings, including those from newspapers, recruiter openings, job boards, employer sites, and trade magazines. It also provides access to the unadvertised job market among employers, recruiters and growth companies.

A self directed checkbook IRA allows you to have checkbook control of your IRA retirement account.

If you’re a seasoned real estate investor, you know how quickly expenses can add up. A few trips to Lowes, a few calls to your contractor or a simple mistake made by an inexperienced handyman means you have to shell out money, money, money – right out of your pocket.

Now imagine in addition, if you had to pay an additional fee to the custodian every time you needed to cover an expense related to your investment. On top of your financial losses, it can be an enormous expense of time and frustrating to say the least. We are sure you would agree that this is no way to steward what is likely the most important asset you have – your IRA nest egg.

Checkbook control means practically being able to buy what you need when you need it and not when you can chase down your custodian for a signature. As you probably already know, sometimes the best investments are made before others learn about them. Without checkbook writing privileges, great investment opportunities could be missed.

What Does Checkbook Control Of Your IRA Mean?

Having checkbook control means you get to manage your IRA retirement account to maximize your retirement investment. Checkbook control gives you the ability to invest in practically any way you see fit. The following is a short list of what you can invest in with your Checkbook IRA: undeveloped land, tax liens, hard money loans, private notes, commercial real estate, discounted paper – the list is practically endless.

Checkbook control gives you the ultimate control over your retirement funds. Call TSD-IRA to learn more at 877-339-4559.

You’ll also need newspapers, paper, packing foam and/or bubble wrap. You’ll also need tape, a marker pen and if you get them, stickers to mark your boxes.

Buying boxes and containers from hardware stores or supermarkets is a good way to get sturdy, reusable containers for your new house, but may not prove to be cost effective if you’ve got lots of belongings. Boxes are a good, cheap alternative to plastic containers and can be bought from websites, along with tape and stickers to mark your boxes.

Boxes are a great way to pack things into regular spaces and makes them easier to carry. You can also get boxes from supermarkets, and sometimes from recycler and on Craig’s list. Some removal firms also supply them if you’re using their vans, or their moving men, or provide them if you are letting them pack for you. Packing clothes into suitcases or bags means that they are easy to transport, and easy to fit into spare spaces in your transport, but you need to make sure that the bags or cases are sturdy enough to contain your belongings well.

Cheap bags are no good if you need to use two of them or they burst when you pick them up. Snagging risks are also something you’ll have to consider, as anything sharp might cause tears in your bags. Containers should all be stackable to get the most use whilst moving - or should be placed in front of your boxes so that your space is maximized whilst the move is in progress.

As more and more businesses realize the power of the internet, the ways that we live and work are becoming more flexible. Many companies offer incentives for their employees to work from home one or more times a week, while government programs may pay up to $300 a month to telecommuters and carpoolers. This is fantastic news for everyone, but the flexibility available to small business owners is truly incredible.

With this rise in electronic commuting comes a new wave in vacationing: the working vacation. As more and more small businesses become entirely “portable,” owners are taking more time with their families, and the idea of a pleasant family dinner on a beach balcony, followed by stargazing, bedtime, and mom or dad taking an hour or two before bed to “check in at the office” is no longer something for the rest of the family to complain about, but rather to be thankful for. However, before taking your own working vacation, be sure that you’re prepared for the complications that are so inherent to this new, electronic office.

Many savvy working vacationers choose locations like the Gulf Shores for their “holidays” because the weather is pleasant year-round, the prices are affordable and the atmosphere is laid-back and family friendly. If you decide to try out Gulf Shores for your next working vacation, here are some tips to be sure you’re as relaxed – and productive – as possible.

1. Find Emergency Gulf Shores Computer Repair Before You Have A Problem

Gulf Shores computer repair is far more available and varied than you might expect. A simple online search will show you the locations of both specialty shops, PC repair locations and electronics stores.

2. Eliminate The Need For Gulf Shores Computer Repair With A “Trip Check”

Have your laptop trip-checked just like you would a car. Have your local specialist check out your machine before you ever leave home.

3. Gulf Shores Computer Repair Doesn’t Have To Break The Bank

Many vacation spots have lots of PC specialists, but these tiny stores charge an arm and a leg just for a problem-evaluation. Try a “bigger name” store that is owned by a chain or franchise – like Radio Shack or Best Buy – instead of relying on the kindness of strangers with an eye on your vacation dollars.
